Birthday Weekend in Red River Gorge

We celebrated my birthday with a weekend of camping and hiking in Red River Gorge, Kentucky, which is part of the Daniel Boone National Forest. This beautiful area is a haven for climbers, kayakers, and backpackers, and is less than a four drive from Indy.

This is the first of our camping/hiking prep trips before we head to Glacier and Yellowstone in the fall. We did pretty well for first-timers, and the goal is to have fun and improve the process so that we can reduce stress while we're gone for nearly four weeks.

We stayed in the Koomer Ridge camp ground, hosted by the National Forests. The first night was great, but the second night some idiot douchebag partiers showed up and blared their music and yelled like fools all night. The camp hosts did not do their jobs and let these noise polluters annoy other campers.

The nature was breathtaking, but I really have to ask myself if I want to identify with the human race. These beautiful arches and steep canyons were millions of years in the makings, but they are covered in carvings and graffiti. Why do people find it necessary to deface nature?

Today I'm feeling a little sad that our first trip is over. Next up, we are camping in Brown County State Park and going to the Lucinda Williams concert at the Bluebird in Bloomington!
